🧠 How 3D Printing Works
From Digital Design to a Physical Object
Ever wonder how a 3D printer turns a digital file into something you can hold in your hand? Here's a simplified look at the process we use at Mesh3D Up to bring your ideas (or your favorite online models) to life.
1. 🖥️ Designing the Model
Every print starts with a 3D model—usually created in CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software. Models can be designed from scratch or downloaded from online marketplaces like MakerWorld, Thingiverse, or Cults3D.
Most models are saved as .STL
, .OBJ
, or .3MF
files, which define the object’s shape and size.
2. 📐 Slicing the Model
Once the 3D model is ready, it needs to be sliced—no, not with a knife!
Slicing software (like Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer) takes the model and cuts it into thin layers. It then generates G-code, which is the language your printer understands. This G-code includes instructions for things like temperature, speed, and layer height.
3. 🔥 Printing the Object
The sliced file is sent to the 3D printer. Here’s where the magic happens:
Using a process called Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), the printer heats a spool of plastic filament and extrudes it through a nozzle.
Layer by layer, the melted filament builds the object from the bottom up.
The process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over 24 hours, depending on the size and detail of the model.
4. 🧹 Post-Processing
After printing, some models require cleanup or finishing. This might include:
- Removing support structures
- Light sanding or polishing
- Assembly or gluing
- Optional painting or sealing (by you, if desired)
All items we send out are cleaned and quality-checked, so they’re ready to use or display when they arrive.
🎯 That’s It!
Whether you're ordering a custom project, a model you found online, or something from our shop, the process behind the scenes is the same: design ➜ slice ➜ print ➜ finish.
At Mesh3D Up, we handle the technical stuff so you don’t have to. You just bring the idea—we bring it to life.
