Standard Metal Mailbox Doors

Small Metal Mailbox Doors

The small metal mailbox style is one of the more compact versions. These typically use bottom hinge holes and a small arched front opening. The replacement door is designed with built-in hinge pegs, one on each side near the bottom. Installation is usually easiest by inserting one peg into the original hinge hole, gently flexing the door, and seating the second peg into the other side.

Medium Metal Mailbox Doors

Medium metal mailboxes can be tricky because there are a couple of very close sizes. Some are around 8 inches wide, while others are closer to 8.25 inches or slightly wider — and that small difference can matter. That is why I separate plastic mailbox doors by style instead of only calling them small, medium, or large. One plastic mailbox may have a rounded top and front hinge holes; another may have a flatter shape, a deeper lip, or a different latch area. Two plastic mailboxes can be close in size but still need different replacement doors. For plastic mailbox replacements, matching the style shown in the photos is extremely important.

Some mailboxes have a more decorative or USPS-style arched front. These can have raised details, unique curves, or an older-style shape that does not match the common standard metal doors.

These designs usually take more custom modeling work because the shape is not just a plain arch — the curve, front face, and latch details all need to be recreated carefully. For these, I may need clearer photos, extra measurements, or even a straight-on picture of the opening to confirm the correct fit.

Built-In Hinge Pegs vs. Bolt-On Mounting

Most of my replacement doors use built-in hinge pegs. These are printed as part of the door and are designed to snap into the original hinge holes at the bottom of the mailbox.

  3. Seat the second peg into the other hinge hole.
